Guide: Moving Your Boat South for the Winter

Each year, many boat owners make the seasonal move from northern waters to southern destinations. Whether you’re cruising the Intracoastal or hiring a transport service, proper planning ensures a smooth transition—and helps prevent costly surprises.

Here’s what to consider before your boat heads south this winter:

1. Start Early

Begin preparations 6–8 weeks in advance to line up transportation, secure marina space, and update your insurance coverage. The earlier you plan, the more options you’ll have.

2. Review Navigation Limits

Your insurance policy may specify where your boat can operate. Confirm that your navigation territory includes southern waters or offshore routes if you’ll be traveling along the coast.

3. Check Your Lay-Up Period

If your policy includes a lay-up period (when coverage is reduced while the boat is out of use), make sure it aligns with your travel or storage dates. Adjusting this in advance can prevent unintended coverage gaps.

4. Update Marina Information

If you’ll be docking at a new marina or state, let your agent know. Updating your mooring location ensures your policy reflects accurate risk details and maintains uninterrupted protection.

5. Prepare Your Vessel

Schedule mechanical checks, haul-out service, and inspections. Secure loose items, test bilge pumps, and check lines and fenders. A well-prepared vessel travels safer—whether by water or trailer.

6. Verify Transport Coverage

If you’re shipping your vessel, clarify which insurance applies during transit—the carrier’s or yours. Ask for documentation of the carrier’s policy limits and deductibles.

7. Gather Key Documents

Keep registration papers, insurance certificates, and emergency contacts on hand (and digital copies saved). These are essential if you encounter a delay or inspection en route.

8. Watch the Weather

Monitor marine forecasts and avoid high-risk windows for storms or rough seas. A flexible schedule and awareness of changing conditions can make all the difference.

9. Talk to Your Insurance Agent

Before departure, review your policy with your agent. We can confirm navigation limits, update your lay-up status, and ensure all crew and transport exposures are covered.
