The 2024 hurricane season has been notably active so far and is expected to remain so through the peak months of August and September. The season began early with several significant storms, including Hurricane Beryl, which became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic. This season is being driven by near-record warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and the potential development of La Niña, which typically enhances hurricane activity.
NOAA has updated its outlook for the season, predicting between 17 and 24 named storms, of which 8 to 13 could become hurricanes, including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). This forecast indicates a higher-than-normal activity level, with the potential for more intense storms as we move further into the season (NOAA) (NOAA).
Given these conditions, boat owners should remain vigilant and ensure they have a solid plan in place for securing their vessels, including a pre-arranged haul-out plan, to protect against potential storm damage.
